- Exemption papers were granted by the Newark Village Board to Arthur
Taylor, C.W. VanBuren, Henry Frey, and Ernest Seider, having served as
active volunteer firemen to at least 5 years.
- Dr. Thatcher, Ray Gardenier, and Charles Crothers all traveled to
New York City to attend the New York Automobile Show, paying special
attention to the Mora Automobile exhibit.
- W.H. Parker just completed a new barn on his premises on West Union
Street.
- The Farmer’s Hotel near the New York Central on North Main St.,
burned to the ground. Employee Cameron Cummings lost his life in the
fire.
- Out in East Palmyra, a chicken pie and experience social was held at
the Methodist Church.

The Newark Courier- A. Eugene Bolles, Editor & Publisher
- Newark businessman and former Mayor, Paul D. Newton was named
Undersheriff by Wayne County Sheriff John L. Newman. An honorary
position, Newton would fill the office of Sheriff upon the death or
resignation of Sheriff Newman.
- Over 1200 homes and businesses in Newark were without gas service as
temperatures dropped to as low as minus 20 degrees.
Mr.
Elve and Mr. Combes, opening their shoe store found the building
filled with gas. The gas leak was found a repaired in a few hours.
- Wayne County Sheriff Jeremiah "Jerry" Collins
announced plans to retire effective January 1, 1934. Collins devoted
51 years of service to the county and was without a doubt the most
feared….. and most loved man in Wayne County. He was known to
millions for his spectacular feat of capturing the most infamous and
notorious train robber that New York State ever saw.

- Shown were Dr. James Tyner, Raymond A. Muth, and Dr.C. Dupha Reeves,
Co-Chairs of a $400,000 Newark -Wayne Community Hospital expansion
fund drive.
- Twins Doris and Lois Lyon, associated with the C.W. Stuart Nursery
firm since 1938, were presented with recognition gifts by Stuart Vice
President, Leslie Engleson.
- Francis (Pat) Smith, of Bartle Avenue, was appointed Operations
Research Analysis at the Jackson & Perkins Company by Charles H.
Perkins.
- Newark’s first wrestling team was pictured- Members were Paul
Bartucca, John Flanagan, Charles Hamelinck, Tom Jaeger, Jim Palmeri,
Dan McKeon, Bill Beckwith, Fred Russell, John DeVries, Lester Ikewood,
Bob Toye, and Irving Browning.

- Major stockholder Bennett S. LeBow of New York City announced plans
to purchase Sarah Coventry Inc. from Catamore Company of Rhode Island.
No change were planned.
- Richard D. Boerman of Colton Avenue was named Manager of Lincoln
First Bank’s Newark branch office.
- In Sodus, Myers Community Hospital was awarded a certificate of
accreditation by the joint commission on accreditation of hospitals
citing the facility for providing high quality health care.
- Newark’s first major storm of the season closed schools and
curtailed Christmas shopping.
- The newly formed Wayne County Photography Club met to discuss future
programs.
