O'Connor, Michael W. - Michael W. O’Connor, 55, of Rochester / Newark, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at the Webster Comfort Care Home.  Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, November 20 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 21 at St. Michael’s Church, South Main Street, Newark.  Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Palmyra. Memorials in his name may be made to the Webster Comfort Care Home, 700 Holt Road, Webster, New York 14580. Mr. O’Connor was born in Clifton Springs on August 5, 1954, the son of Edward and Alice DeGroote O’Connor.  Mike was a master carpenter doing finishing work at Sibley’s Department Stores and for Gerber Homes. Mike is survived by two daughters Michelle and Mandi O’Connor both of Rochester, his ex-wife Pattie, his father Edward (Alma) of Port Gibson, nine siblings Mark (Penny) O’Connor, Tom (Lorrie) O’Connor, Shirley (Butch) Roberts, Kathy (Ken) Shero, Deborah (Don) Oakleaf, John & James O’Connor, Mary (Art) Swartele and Edward O’Connor, many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his mother Alice DeGroote O’Connor. Bohling, Edward C. Sr. - Edward C Bohling Sr's  Mr.Bohling was born in Syracuse, New York on February 26, 1935 and expired at a hospital in Panama City, Florida on May 24,2002. His ashes were laid to rest without ceremony at the Joy Union Rural Cemetery on Saturday, November 7, 2009. Mr Richard Crain of North Rose represented Edward C. Bohling Jr. for the interment. To his friends in the Wayne County region, Mr. Bohling was known as Sparky. When Sparky's father passed away in 1952 he dropped out of school to help support his mother and younger siblings. For many years Sparky worked as a forklift operator at Duffy Motts in Williamson. In 1974 the entire clan had moved to Texas in search of better opportunity. Sparky's mother Sarah, known as Sadie, expired in Shertz, Texas in 1982 and is buried in a San Antonio, Texas Cemetery. His brother Robert expired in December of 1987 and is buried in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery as is half brother Charles. Sparky's sister Diane returned to New York with her husband Arthur Marshall in the late 1980's and for many years lived in Waterloo. Diane expired January 5, 2009. His brother Frederick passed away also in 1987 and is buried in the Joy Cemetery. Sparky's last sibling, Mr. Roger Bohling resides in Palmyra. Sparky is survived by his children Edward Jr. of Tampa, FL; daughter Carol Patch of Indianapolis, IN; Brian Bohling of Fountain, FL, Allan Bohling of San Antonio, TX, Derrick Bohling of Manchester, TN and Jeffrey Bohling of Murfreesboro, TN. Sparky had several grandchildren: Michelle, Stephanie, Elizabeth and Paul Bohling from son Edward Jr; Christopher and Larry John Patch from daughter Caroline, and Ashley (deceased), Sarah and Jessica from son Derrick. Sparky also was a great grandfather to daughter Caroline's grandchildren. Heritage Funeral Home of Panama City, Florida handled cremation arrangements.

Gloria D. SheehanSheehan, Gloria D. - Gloria D. Sheehan, 92, of Newark, died Monday, November 16, 2009 at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, November 19 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 20 at St. Michael’s Church, South Main Street, Newark. Burial will be in East Newark Cemetery. Memorials in her name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 435 East Henrietta Road, Rochester, New York 14620 or the American Heart Association, 2113 Chili Avenue, Rochester, New York 14624. Mrs. Sheehan was born on August 16, 1917 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, the daughter of Antonio and Mary Distasio Conte.  She was an occupational therapist at the Newark Developmental Center, retiring in 1981.  Gloria served in the US Coast Guard Spars during World War II where she was a radio operator.  She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, serving as its president, at one time.  For many years, Gloria worked for the Board of Elections at the District #7’s voting booth in Newark.  She loved to dance, belonging to several area dance clubs.  She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, making dolls and rugs. Gloria was a loving wife and mother and grandmother.  She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas J., a son Thomas M. of Newark, three daughters Nadine Sheehan of Tucson, AZ, Kathleen (David, Jr.) Jones and Patricia Mitchell both of Newark, two grandchildren Zechariah Lombardi and Alexandra Mitchell.  Also surviving are three sisters Lucille Melham of Lemoyne, PA,, Virginia Blair, Iron Mountain, MI, and Barbara Wolpers of Minnetonka, MN., several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by five siblings. Edward RoemerRoemer, Edward J. - Edward J. Roemer, 75, of Newark, died Saturday, November 14, 2009 at his home on Snake Road. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark.  A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 18 at the funeral home.  Burial will be in East Newark Cemetery. Memorials in his name may be made to the Wayne County Humane Society, 1475 County House Road, Lyons, New York 14489. Mr. Roemer was born on April 16, 1934 in Newark, the son of John and Nellie Kotvis Roemer.  He was an electrician and a member of Local 81 IBM for over 44 years.  At one time, Ed had worked as a paid fireman for the Newark Fire Department and worked for the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department on car and boat patrol.  From 1973 to 1999, he operated EJ Roemer & Son Excavating.  He was also the Village of Newark and Town of Arcadia Dog Warden from 1984 to 1996.  Ed is a member and past chief of the Marbletown Fire Department.  He was one of its founders in 1970, using his home as the first fire station until the new fire hall was completed on Silver Hill Road in 1973. He is survived by his children Deborah (James) Russell of Newark, Douglas (Toni Jean) of Penfield and David (Julie) of Lyons, nine grandchildren, a great granddaughter; two sisters Gail (Bob) Schutt of Marion, Arlene (Frank) Steffen of Penn Yan, several nieces and nephews.  Ed was predeceased by his wife Barbara Jane in 1985, a grandson Michael Russell in 1987, two sisters Bernice Roemer and Bendeane Featherly.

Geary, Edmund Bernard - Edmund Bernard Geary, 49, of Newark, died peacefully Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Tierson, Maynard A. - Maynard A. Tierson of New Smyrna Beach, FL, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 at his home at the age of 79. Mr. Tierson was a maintenance supervisor for St. John Fisher College in Rochester for 20 years before his retirement. A United States Army veteran of the Korean conflict, he was born in Newark and moved to the Florida seven years ago from Fairport. He was a 42-year member of the American Legion in Newark and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and riding motorcycles.  A memorial service was on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at the Quail Hollow Mobile Home Estates Clubhouse at 2051 Pioneer Trail in New Smyrna Beach, FL, with Mr. Tierson’s grandson, the Rev. Adrian James Tierson, officiating. Cremation was by Dudley Crematory in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Myrtle Greule; two sons, Michael of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and James of Phelps; one daughter, Deborah Rogers of Rochester; one stepson, Fred Greule of Palmyra; three stepdaughters, Sharon Jansen of Phelps; Cindy Deso of Plattsburg and Robyn Procktor of Wolcott; two grandchildren, the Rev. Adrian James Tierson and Emily Tierson; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Ford, Mary Ellen - Mary Ellen Ford of Savannah/Newark, died peacefully Saturday, October 17, 2009 in Mims, FL.
Mary Ellen was born May 21, 1926. She worked at the Newark Developmental Center as an occupational therapist for 25 years, then retired and moved to Mims, FL with her husband, where they spent the rest of their life together.
Mary Ellen is survived by her two daughters Penny (Joe) McClinton, of Marion and Florida and Judy (Angelo) Maldonado, of Florida; seven grandchildren Mark (Melissa Bournibal) Verkey, Mandy (Todd Peters) Verkey, Kelly Cox, Chris Cox, Matt Cox, Molly McClinton and Kyle McClinton; two great-grandchildren Mackenzy and Hanna Peters; and lots of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Richard of 62 years on June 4, 2008. Mary Ellen will be put to rest with her husband Richard in the spring of 2010 in Wolcott. Burgess, Frederick W. Jr -  Frederick W. Burgess, Jr., formerly of Newark, died peacefully on Saturday, (October 31, 2009) in Kissimmee, Florida, at the age of 78, after a courageous battle with cancer. Frederick was born October 21, 1931 in Lyons, New York, the son of Frederick W. and Edna Baker Burgess. He was a life-long resident and businessman in Newark. He started the first Tastee Freeze in Newark in 1954 and was owner of  several other businesses in the Newark Area including Freddie’s Drive In, DeVries Gardens, Freddie’s Insta Wash and the  Street of Shops. Fred was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Newark. In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting and  restoring antique clocks and watches and traveling around the world with his wife and close friends. He was also a  member of several antique watch associations and was past president of the NAWCC Chapter 13. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, at St. Michael’s Church, South Main Street, Newark. The family will greet friends in the church hall after the Mass. Burial will be in Newark, Cemetery. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ann Marie (DeVries) Burgess; nine sons Steven, Terence (Roxanne), Matthew (Wendy), Christopher (Shelia) and Frederick III (Shelly) all of Newark, Jeffrey (Betsy) of Chesapeake, VA, Jay (Essie) of Sugar Land, TX, Joseph (Karen) of Henderson, NV and Thomas (Julie) of  Phelps and one daughter Julie (Tony) Celestino of Kissimmee, FL.; 27 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Betty Norcott Griffith of Florida; several nieces and nephews. Mables, Thomas H. - Thomas H. Mables, 48,of Newark, entered into rest suddenly at his home on October 29, 2009. 
Thomas served in the U.S. Army from 1979 to 1982. He was formerly employed by the J.B. Hunt Trucking Co. Shawcross, John Hubert "Jack" - John Hubert "Jack" Shawcross, 86, of Camillus, NY passed away October 27th at St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. He was born in Hamburg, NY to Hubert "Bert" and Isabel Shawcross. After graduating from Newark High School he served in the Army Air Force in Italy and Africa,15th Air Force, 461st Bomb Group, 765 Bomb Squadron. He graduated from Rider College in Trenton, NJ, and attended the S.U. College of Business MBA program. Jack was a member of the VFW and past Commander of the American Legion, both in Newark. He spent the majority of his life working in the coin operation business, including Rex Bilotta Distributors, Advance Vending, Rowe International, Bally Northeast, T.O.P Distributors and Mutual Coin Op. He was a member and former Deacon at Fairmount Community Church and upon retirement started Treasures and Trinkets Antiques and Collectibles with his wife Bettie. His family and friends will long remember his thoughtfulness, his inability to drive by a garage sale for the next great bargain, and his sense of humor. He is predeceased by his sister Dorothy Beader Mamuscia, niece Nancy Lynn and nephew Philip Swain. Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bettie Prutzman; daughters Joan (Paul) Brooks of Cazenovia and Jane Shawcross of Syracuse; a son, John “Jeffery” (Debi) Shawcross of Richmond, VA; sister Gertrude Mohr of S. Orbaker, Roland R. - Roland R. Orbaker, 92, of Williamson, died October 22, 2009. He was a lifelong resident of Williamson. Predeceased by his wife, Agnes VerDow Orbaker. Survivors include her sons, Andres (Susan) and Gary (Kathy) Orbaker of Williamson; sister Pearl (Chester) Peters of Pultneyville; grandchildren Douglas, Jennifer and Kate Orbaker; sisters-in-law Suzanne Orbaker of Florida, Eleanor Guard and Evelyn Hayslett of Newark, June (Carol) Jones of California; brother-in-law Ricahrd (Eldine) VerDow of Palmyra; many special nieces, nephews, friends and caregivers. Roland spent his life on the family farmstead. Roland was a fruit grower and agricultural industry leader throughout his career. He was a 65 year member of the Pultneyville Masonic Lodge No. 159, a member of Rochester Consistory and Damascus Temple, Williamson Rotary Club, Wayne County Farm Bureau, Williamson Planning Board, member and past president of the NYS Cherry Board and a lifetime member of the Pultneyville Reformed Church. Welcher, Thomas L. - Thomas L. Welcher, 56, of Newark/Sodus died Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Strong Memorial Hospital. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 29 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark.  Funeral services will be on Friday, October 30 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating.  Burial will be in Fairville Cemetery. Mr. Welcher was born on February 18, 1953 in Rochester, the son of Paul and Marian Rykbost Welcher.  Tom graduated from Newark Senior High School in 1971.  He went on to Alfred to study Surveying and graduated in 1973.  For the past 22 years, he was a Heavy Equipment Operator for Art Graf Inc.  He was a member of the Wayne County Farm Bureau.  Tom was the proud owner of the T & D Farm. He is survived by his fiancé Donna Fisher of Sodus, two children Andrea (Alan) Place of Hampton VA and Adam Welcher of Newark,  two grand children Chloe and Lillian Place of Hampton VA, a brother Jeffery (Theresa) Welcher of Oneida, a sister-in-law Sue Welcher of Newark,  two nephews Evan and Aaron Welcher and a niece Meghan Welcher.  He was predeceased by his parents Paul and Marian Rykbost Welcher and a brother Frank Welcher.

 

Tilly, Sharon R. - Sharon R. Tilly, 60, of Clifton Springs, died Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the Clifton Springs Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31 at 83  East Main St., Clifton Springs.   Burial will be in Fairville Cemetery. She is survived by two brothers Paul (Betty Lou) Tilly of Avon and Michael Tilly of Macedon, a sister Linda Tellier of Newark, several nieces and nephews,  caregivers and many friends at 83 East Main St in Clifton Springs.

Steele, Stephen M. - Stephen M. Steele, 56, of Newark died peacefully at home on Saturday, October 24, 2009 . Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28 at the Palmisano Funeral Home, Inc., 28 Genesee St. , Geneva .  The American Legion Post 435 and V.F.W. Post 6433 will meet at the funeral home at 7 p.m. for military honors.  A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 29 at the funeral home.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family. If desired, memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Wayne and Seneca Counties , 1120 S. Main St. Newark , NY 14512 or St. Michael’s Church, 401 S. Main St. Newark , NY 14513 . Stephen was born Dec. 6, 1952 , in Ovid, and was a son of the late John L. and Lena M. (Cavone) Steele. He served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1977.  Stephen worked for 30 years as a truck driver for GM, Chrysler, Toyota and Ford.  He was a member of the American Legion August Mauer Post 286, in Newark .  In his spare time Stephen enjoyed cars and going to races.  In Stephen’s own words, “To all my friends, loved ones, acquaintances and great neighbors: Adios amigos.” He is survived by his wife, Johanna I. Wemett, Edith, C. - Edith C. Wemett, 92, of Newark/Canandaigua, formerly of Newark and summer resident of Canandaigua,  died Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at her home in Venice, Florida. Family and friends may call from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, October 23rd at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark.  Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, October 24th in the Chapel of Park Presbyterian Church, Maple Court, Newark with Rev. Stuart Buisch officiating.  Burial will be in Newark Cemetery. Mrs. Wemett was born July 19, 1917 in Newark, the daughter of Harry and Sarah Blanchard Chapman.  She was a graduate of the Universities of Rochester, Syracuse and Geneseo, majoring in library science.  A life member of the Park Presbyterian Church, she was a volunteer and board member of the Newark Public Library, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and a member of the Newark Country Club. She is survived by her daughter Martha Wemett of Venice, Florida, a son Paul (Sarah) Wemett of Newark, and a daughter-in-law Martha Wemett of Newark, two grandchildren Kimberly Smith of Mountain Home, Idaho and Christopher (Maria) Wemett of Berkley Heights, New Jersey and five great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband Roy in 1995 and son David in 2006.

Rinker, Sandra L.  - Sandra L. Rinker of Sodus, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2009, at home surrounded by her loving family and friends. Sandra was born on February 2, 1956. Henderson, Agnes - Agnes "Nan" Henderson, 98, of Newark, died peacefully, Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the DeMay Living Center. Ms. Henderson was born the daughter of the late John and Helen (Watson) Henderson on May 22, 1911 in Falkirk, Scotland. She severed as an Elder of the Park Presbyterian Church for six years. Ms. Henderson also served as the Sunday School Primary Grade Superintendent and on the TIC Committee for eight years. She also was a member of the Woman’s Association and the Woman’s Circle at the church. As a member of the Newark Business & Professional Woman’s Club, she served as the President two times. Ms. Henderson had worked for Garlock Corp., Clifton Springs Hospital and as a private secretary at Interior Decorators. Fulfilling Ms. Henderson’s wishes there will be no services at this time. A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date. Ms. Henderson will be remembered by her nephew Walter M. Heatlie of England; two special friends Sharon (John) Griswold and family of Lock Berlin and Eileen and Curt Clicquennoi and family of New Jersey. Corthals, Dorothy - Dorothy Corthals, 93, of Williamsville/Newark, died Friday, October 9, 2009 at St. Francis Home of Williamsville. Mrs. Corthals was born the daughter of the late Williams and Mae (Vrooman) Allen on April 9, 1916 in Newark, NY. She worked for Jackson and Perkins for 36 years as the collection manager before working for the village of Newark water department for 10 years. Several years after retirement she moved to the Buffalo area to be close to her daughter and family. All services will be private. Arend - John W. “Jack” -  Jack Arend, 62, of Unadilla, Georgia, died Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at the Emory University Transplant Center in Atlanta, Georgia, after a courageous battle with a long illness. Mr. Arend was born on October 22, 1946 in Utica, New York, the son of Lewis and Helen Harris Arend. He graduated from Newark High School in 1965, the NY State College at Morrisville and RIT in Rochester, NY. Jack served in the US Army for ten years. H e was stationed in Korea and Germany. Prior to moving to Unadilla, Jack had lived in Sidney, N.Y. and in North Carolina. He retired from IT Technologies in 2008 due to his illness. Black, Robert A.  - Robert A. Black, 62, of Palnyra/Newark, died Friday, October 9, 2009, at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. Mr. Black was born on April 11, 1947, in Santiago, Pennsylvania the son of Forrest and Freda Frill Digman. He had worked as a welder at Garlock, Inc. for 40 years. Bob was in the US Army Infantry from 1966 to 1972, serving in Viet Nam. Burm, Peter H. Jr. - Peter Henry Burm Jr., 78, of Newark,  died Friday, October 9, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Burm was born the son of the late Peter H. and Pearl (Francisco) Burm on July 20, 1931 in Sodus, NY. He worked for many years at the Canandaigua VA as a Therapist. Mr. Burm enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a member of the East Palmyra Volunteer Fire Dept. for 35 years, the American Legion Post 286 of Newark and the East Palmyra Presbyterian Church. The funeral home proudly flies the Army Flag in honor of his service to our country during the Korean War. There will be no prior calling hours. VanEenaeme, Clara M. - Clara Mara VanEenaeme, 92, of Newark,  died Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Mrs. VanEenaeme was born the daughter of the late Leon and Matillda (Calaus) VanLoo on September 9, 1917 in Williamson, NY. After the death of her mother, her father moved her back to Belgium where her parents were born. She stayed there for 30 years before returning to the Newark area in 1954. Mrs. VanEenaeme was a member of St. Michael Church the Newark VFW War Mom’s and Holland-American Club. She served lunches for many years for seniors at the Newark Community Center. Mrs. VanEenaeme loved crochet, sew and dance. Often she would sing at The Gandy Dancer Restaurant and Bauer’s Inn. She was employed by C.H. Stuart/Sarah Coventry. Hess, Harold B. Jr. - Harold B. Hess Jr., 71, of Clifton Springs/Newark, passed at at the DeMay Living Center on Wednesday, October 7, 2009. Harold was born November 26, 1937 in Rochester, NY, the son of the late Harold and Ethel Hess. He was a graduate of Victor Central Schools. Harold went on to be a mechanic at local bowling alleys. He was an avid fan of most sports including his favorites: football and NASCAR. Harold loved to watch his large collection of John Wayne movies. O'Dell, Sherlea A. - Sherlea A. O’Dell, 80, died Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, New York. She is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, Carl J.,  her children Gary (Patricia) Schoepfel of Chicago, Dianne (Chuck) Wisniewski of Syracuse, Danny (Lisa) O’Dell of Newark, Dale (Jennifer) O’Dell of St Louis, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, a sister Jean Tripp of Marion, several nieces and nephews. Mrs. O’Dell was born on May 1, 1929 in Rochester, the daughter of John and Antoinette “Nettie” Benninger Laveck.  Sherlea and her husband owned and operated Carl’s Pools, Inc in Newark, for fourteen years, before retiring in 1988.  In retirement, they split their time living in Three Mile Bay, New York and Leesburg, Florida. In the early 1990’s she returned to Newark where she lived with her sister. Mrs. Strong was a member of the Emmanuel Methodist Church of Newark since 1935. Mrs. Strong will be remembered by her sister Myrtle Bloom of Newark; niece Bonnie (Steve) Smart of SC; great niece Debbie Brannen of GA; great nephews Mickey (Lisa) Cox of GA and Bradd Cox of GA; great, great nephews Daniel and Joshua Cox both of GA. Mrs. Strong was predeceased by her husband Russell Strong in 1985; brother Russell Barnmaker in 2000; brother-in-law C. Otis Bloom in 1999.
